I believe that Baldwin would be amazed at the strides our society has made in the years since his book. Racism, though still prevalent in our time, has diminished greatly. He would have enjoyed what the civil rights movement brought forth and been prouder to live in this time period. Of course our society still has problems but no where near the extent to which that time had. In the past year, this country has elected an african american as president of the United States.

Yes, Nathan, I do think that Baldwin would see a great cause for celebration and hope for the future with Obama's election to the presidency; he would probably also ask, "What took so long?" It makes a very big difference in how we look at ourselves as Americans, and in how the rest of the world sees the United States. What can you contribute in your own part of the world to this process of minimizing the negative impacts of racism?
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to answer that question because racism is such a large problem, but if the trait does not pass into the next generation than it may, one day, be halted. I will try and teach my son that racism is wrong and that all people should live together as equals. If everyone does that then, maybe someday, this problem will diminish.
